Electric golf carts are quickly becoming a convenient alternative to cars. Not only are they smaller and more maneuverable, but they also don’t require licenses if they are being operated on private property. Furthermore, depending on the model you choose, they can be more affordable than a regular car, and you also don’t need to spend money on gas.

However, electric golf carts are still vehicles and should be operated carefully. There is an average of 15,000 golf cart accidents each year in the U.S., and the last thing you want is to count yourself amongst that number.

When you drive your cart, make sure that you are staying safe and following these tips:

  • Make sure all your limbs are within the cart. If an arm or a leg is hanging outside the golf cart, it is far easier for you to get injured.
  • Don’t drink and drive. Like with a regular car, make sure you are not driving while under the influence of alcohol. This is doubly important if you plan on using your cart on a roadway, alongside cars and other heavier vehicles.
  • Install and use a seat belt in your cart. Not all carts come with an inbuilt seat belt. If your model does not have one, make sure to install one that will prevent you from being flung out of the cart in case of an accident.
  • Slow down when ascending and descending hills. The steeper the hill, the more careful you should be. If you plan on using your cart on hills often, you should also look into upgrading your cart to make sure it can handle the frequent climb, including upgrading your motor if you need to have additional torque capacity.

Final Thoughts

As long as you follow some common-sense guidelines, electric golf carts are very safe vehicles to operate. However, like every other vehicle, you should ensure that you treat your cart with the care and respect that it deserves.
