In 1788, Mathias Denman, Colonel Robert Patterson, and Israel Ludlow founded Cincinnati. Together, they bought 800 acres of land at the mouth of River Licking and named the establishment Losantiville, which means “the city opposite the mouth of Licking River.”
Located on the Ohio River, the town prospered as it met the needs of westward-bound pioneers who traveled the river.
The governor of the Northwest Territory changed the name of the settlement to “Cincinnati” in honor of the Society of the Cincinnati.
